Blessings In Your Blending: Be Strong and Courageous

Be Strong and Courageous

By: Kristie Carpenter, The Blended Family Mom.
I want something different.

I want to live my life with purpose. And then, fear comes. The voices of “you will never be enough” or “don’t dream too big because it will never happen.”  And then, I read Joshua, Chapter One in the Bible. This is what I have been looking for – the change I need and the plan laid out completely. Wherever you are – whatever the struggle or stronghold – whatever the dream or desire -- this year can be different. Let’s see how God tells us how to do that.

The Lord speaks to Joshua. The Israelites’ previous leader, Moses, died and now Joshua is to continue to lead the Israelites to the land God had promised them. This is probably Joshua’s biggest undertaking ever but God is good to remind Joshua that as God was with Moses, God would never leave or forsake Joshua.

God tells Joshua in verse six to “be strong and courageous.” This is the first of four times this phrase is used in this chapter. In this verse, God is telling Joshua to be ready, have faith and trust in God because Joshua will be the leader to many people. God was fulfilling a promise to His people and He would use Joshua as a part of plan.

God has a plan for you as well.

Be strong and courageous. You will lead people. They may be stepkids, bio kids, adopted kids, neighbor kids. You are whom they will look to. God will not leave or forsake you – He has promises to fulfill!

God says it again – be strong and courageous – in verse seven. This command is then followed by God laying out the plan. The plan is straightforward. God tells Joshua to be careful to obey all the law that Moses gave to Joshua – don’t turn from it. God also reminded Joshua to meditate on God’s word day and night.

This is important for us. We are to walk in obedience and do our best to hear God, know God and serve God. A promise is then given by God. He said, “be careful to do everything in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” I have experienced that prosperity from obedience. My relationship with my stepkids is the proof!

God, again, tells Joshua to be strong and courageous in verse nine. God backs up His third command by letting Joshua know that God would be with him wherever he went.

That is like the difference between facing a couple of thugs in a dark alley with nothing – and then a big brother comes with guns and ammo and super powers! It is easier to be strong and courageous when you know Who is always with you!

The fourth time we read “be strong and courageous” is from the leaders of the Israelites. Joshua has shared the plan to move the people to the promise land. The response from the leaders is important. They are reflecting the leadership. They are obedient because they have seen Joshua be obedient and they follow because they have seen Joshua following God.

Your blended family may not be good followers right now.

They may not be obedient. But, when you make it a priority to follow God, obey God, believe and trust God – at some point down the road that will impact them as well.

Be strong and courageous, because God is working His plan and promises for His good and glory even in the story of your life.
